Linen vs Cotton – and How to Care for Your Linen with a Little Love

Linen and cotton may look similar at first glance, but the feeling – and durability – are something else entirely. Linen is nature’s own premium material: alive, resilient, and only more beautiful with time. Here we’ll explain what makes linen different from cotton – and how to care for it, so your tablecloths, napkins, and bed linens last for many years to come.

Two natural materials – but different personalities

Both linen and cotton are natural fibres, but they behave quite differently.

Cotton is soft and smooth from the very first wash, while linen has a bit more character – a natural texture that feels cool against the skin and gives any room a relaxed yet elegant look.

Another key difference is durability. Linen is stronger and more resistant to wear, which makes it perfect for everyday textiles – such as tablecloths, towels, or bed linen. In addition, growing flax requires far less water and fewer chemicals than cotton, making it a more sustainable choice for both your home and the planet.

Wrinkles with charm

Unlike cotton, linen isn’t meant to be perfectly smooth – it’s meant to look alive. Those small wrinkles are part of its charm and give the fabric its characteristic, laid-back appearance.

At Lovely Linen, we love that natural, slightly crumpled look that tells a story of a fabric that has been allowed to live. Linen doesn’t need to be perfect – that’s exactly what makes it timeless.

Wash, dry and care – with love

Caring for linen is easier than you might think.

Wash at 40°C with a mild detergent and avoid fabric softener – it can leave a coating that reduces the fabric’s natural breathability. Tumble-dry gently to keep the soft feel, but remove the textiles while they are still slightly damp. This prevents hard creases and helps linen maintain its natural drape.

If you prefer air-drying, that works beautifully too – linen dries quickly and gets a lovely, natural texture when left to hang freely. Fold or hang right away to keep it looking its best.

Linen that gets better with time

The beauty of linen is that it doesn’t just last – it actually improves over time.

Each wash makes the fabric softer, the colour deeper, and the feel even more natural. Linen carries time beautifully – and that’s what makes every tablecloth, napkin, or pillowcase unique.

When you invest in linen, you’re choosing more than something that lasts – you’re choosing a material that grows more beautiful with age. A fabric with soul, character, and history.
